Tip of the Week

Learn to Let Go

As our kids get older, the less they need us. This can be a hard pill to swallow, but it is a natural part of their development. We need to encourage our children’s independence. Don’t be offended when John doesn’t need you to help him with his homework, be proud. When your child needs your help, they’ll ask.

Allow for Consequences

Children need to learn from their mistakes. When Jane forgets to finish her homework, don’t keep reminding her or do it for her. Let the failing grades or the reprimand from the teacher demonstrate the effects of her actions. When children fail to be responsible, they must learn to deal with the repercussions of their actions

Develop Social Responsibility

Children need to be taught that they can also make a valuable contribution to their community. Participating in in groups like the Boy/Girl Scouts encourages kids to be consciously aware of the needs of others. Parents can start their own family service projects like collecting toys for needy children or picking up the litter in their neighborhood.
